Coplay’s Saylor cement kilns: Saving a Part of History

The nine Saylor kilns, which have been around for over 100 years, are aging and in desperate need for repair. Unfortunately, there is currently only enough funding to repair a few of these kilns. Unless awareness of the importance of these kilns is realized, nothing more will be done to save these structures. The Saylor kilns, which are one of a kind, are a historic landmark in Pennsylvania and a symbol of the industrial and hard-working culture of the area. Due to their historic importance, the kilns were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. In 2005 they were put on Preservation Pennsylvania’s list of the top endangered historic sites. To lose these kilns would be a travesty to Pennsylvania, as a large part of our history would be lost.
