Results of Smog Eating Concrete

For some time now, there have been attempts to make a concrete with properties that “eat smog.”  News items in multiple outlets in the past have discussed photo-catalytic mixtures in which titanium dioxide has been used as a cement and concrete additive which allows concrete to react with NOx and other compounds in the presence of sunlight.  Now, a team of scientists in the Netherlands has published results showing the effect of photocatalytic pavement on local pollution levels.  The results show an average daily reduction in ambient NOx concentration of 19%, with a 46% reduction in ideal circumstances.
